An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and began chatting with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
